evlogr vs TeslaMate

The self-hosted favourite. Free software, but you're the sysadmin.

We built evlogr, so we’re not neutral — but a comparison that pretends the alternative has no strengths is useless to you. Below is what each does better, with TeslaMate’s pricing as published on 13 August 2026.

TeslaMate itself is free — what you pay is the server, and what you save with evlogr is the setup, updates and backups, which only you can price. If your hosting is cheap, it wins on cash and we'll say so. Billed in your local currency at checkout.

Where TeslaMate is better

  • It's free, and it's open source — you can read every line and change anything.
  • Complete data ownership: the Postgres database is yours, and Grafana will answer any question you can express in SQL.
  • No third party in the loop at all, which for some people is the whole point. If that's you, TeslaMate is the right answer and we'd rather say so.

Where evlogr is better

  • Nothing to run. No Docker, no Postgres upgrades, no expired certificate on the evening you wanted to look at a road trip.
  • "Free" stops being free once you count a small always-on server and the hours you spend maintaining it.
  • Time-of-use electricity pricing works out of the box rather than being a configuration project.
  • You still keep your data: CSV export and a read-only API, so you're never locked in.

Moving your history across

Export drives and charges from TeslaMate (or straight out of Postgres) as CSV, then import them here. Keep your instance running as long as you like — nothing forces a cutover.

That’s the part most people worry about, so it’s the part we built first — the importer reads a CSV export, shows you exactly what it will bring in, and never duplicates rows if you run it twice.
